It began 15 years ago with a white wine Markus Niggli tasted when visiting his native Switzerland. It was a Kerner blend that had been aged in oak and it was unlike anything he had ever tasted. Markus made a mental note at the time that if Kerner was ever available to him he wanted to make a similar style wine.
Bounty is the key word in this month’s Wine Pairing Weekend theme. There is so much to choose from at the Farmers’ Market these days that it can be a bit difficult for me to focus. Everything looks good and I want to bring all of it home with me. Same goes for the choices from our wine cellar. Decisions, decisions.
If you’re like many people you think of Lodi as red wine country and Zinfandel country in particular. And while it is true the majority of wine grape production in Lodi is red, there is quite a variety of white grape production as well. Some exciting white wine is being produced in Lodi and this tasting includes just a sampling of those wines.
Wine Pairing Weekend is the idea of food blogger David Crowley. His goal was to get food bloggers writing about wine and wine bloggers writing about food. We thought it sounded like a fun idea and jumped right in. Read about what we grilled and what wine we though went best.
We were recently contacted and asked if we would like to participate in a celebration of the wines of the Languedoc region of southern France. It didn’t take long for us to decide yes! We joined others around the country in celebrating #LanguedocDay on May 30. We invited a few of our wine friends and put together dishes we thought would match with each of the four wines we received as tasting samples.
What a spectacular day! The weather was much too warm for early April, but perfect for an outing to the Richmond side of San Francisco Bay. Can’t say I had ever been to Richmond before, just driven through the city on the way to somewhere else. So, when I noticed the Rhone Rangers celebration was to be held in part at Craneway Conference Center and Pavilion at Ford Point, Richmond I was curious.
Lodi Native is a collaborative project among six Lodi winemakers making Zinfandel from six heritage vineyards using a standardized, minimal-intervention style of winemaking. It is intended to showcase some of Lodi’s special Zinfandel vineyards, not the winemaking style. A unique concept which produces six unique and delicious wines.
Burgundy is complex, wonderful and frustrating all at the same time. Serious tasting and study are required to understand its wines. La Paulée de San Francisco provided an opportunity to seriously taste a large number of wines from the region. It was a special experience I highly recommend.
This is the second post reviewing a group of South African wines we received as tasting samples from Cape Classics, an importer of South African (and French) wines in to the US, with distribution in 49 states. We dedicated the prior post to the white wines in the selection.
We have been fans of South African wines since tasting a selection at our local wine shop several years ago. We were delighted to be contacted by Cape Classics, a US importer of a wide selection of wines from South Africa, regarding samples of their wines. We received a nice selection of both red and white wines from South Africa.
