We started our tasting at Turnbull Wine Cellars in the Reserve tasting room. In addition to rows of wine barrels, there is a photo exhibit which features more than 70 photos, mostly black and white, taken between 1903 and 2000. It’s fun to be back in Willcox. We haven’t been down to this corner of Arizona since 2018. We are always torn between hiking and wine tasting when here and try to do a bit of both. We did some wine tasting with our wine friend, JR, yesterday and tasted some delicious varietal wines and complex blends. Vineyards are spread out and the scenery is beautiful. There are also quite a few tasting rooms in downtown Willcox along the railroad tracks. Look for Birds & Barrels, Keeling Schaefer, and Golden Rule Vineyard, Copper Horse Vineyard and Strive Vineyards in the Willcox Commercial Building (where, I’m told, Geronimo came to buy sugar) and Aridus Wine Co just across the tracks. You can get a little taste of what Willcox has to offer in one spot before venturing out to the vineyards. Wines of Willcox has tasting information and maps online. This was fun last night! Just happened upon a delicious wine and small bites pairing at Sel in Old Town Scottsdale. The Sigalas Assyrtiko + poached butter prawn with pea purée might have been the star of the show, but don’t count out the 2018 Arbois Trousseau and mushroom risotto nor the Bandol rosé + pork belly. Who doesn’t love pork belly? So good and room for dessert…tiramisu. 💕 The wine and small bites pairing continues on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. @selrestaurant

Homemade hummus, my version of Merguez sausage, pita bread all washed down with 2018 Two Shepherds Carignan, Trimble Vineyard, Mendocino. Delicious pairing, the red fruit flavors and just the right amount of tannins paired nicely with the spices in the hummus and sausage. Certified organic in the vineyard, foot trodden then pressed, fermented in neutral oak with 9 months aging, unfined, unfiltered, minimal sulfur added. Just delicious wine. 12.18 abv. 2021 Rochioli Rosé of Pinot Noir has to be the most complex rosé I’ve tasted in some time…possibly since we tasted it at the winery and bought several bottles. The aromas include mixed berries and flowers with citrusy berry flavors and lively acidity. It paired perfectly with a warm roasted vegetable and farro salad. Bring on salad and patio season. And rosé season of course. @rochioliwinery

We celebrated Earth Day today by enjoying lunch on the patio with our pal Dave. He brought this gorgeous Bourgogne (I’m trying to learn to say Bourgogne and not Burgundy.) 🙃 We can always count on Dave to choose a delicious wine, though it’s usually a red wine. When he brings a white wine we really take note, because he’s very particular about white wines. This Chardonnay is so aromatic with generous aromas of ambrosia melon, juicy acidity and freshness and a very long finish. We all loved it. Thanks Dave! When good weather, good friends, good food and wine collide! We had a perfect afternoon chatting, sipping and eating on the patio today.
Roasted chicken with roasted sweet potatoes, black beans, roasted poblano and red peppers paired perfectly with 2021 Arnot-Roberts Watson Ranch Cabernet Franc, Napa Valley. Lovely red fruit flavors included raspberries and pomegranates with hints of alfalfa hay in the background and fine tannins. Perfect for Cab Franc lovers. 🍷 I hope you’re sipping something delicious!
