Napa – A Fishing Destination

July arrived along with our summer vacation plans in the Napa Valley. Being an avid fisherwoman, I planned my trip by identifying the local hot spots for Stripers. YouTube videos showed footage of huge Stripers landed on Rat-L-Trap (say it fast – it makes a rattling sound) lures. I was ready, lures, bait, water, sunscreen and a trusty friend in tow we made our way to the “guaranteed catch” hole.

Not long after our first catch, Barry Dodds strolls over and seats himself for a leisurely fish with his son.
We didn’t know Barry, but we could overhear him commenting on my rod and lure. Couldn’t help but notice a slight soft accent and a true enthusiasm for hunting and fishing. Just before leaving, we stepped over to exchange pleasantries with Barry and son, only to discover that he’s the estate manager at Freemark Abbey. Invitations followed and we went our separate ways.

The following day, invitation in hand, heck, we couldn’t NOT go, we took the lovely trek to St. Helena and Barry. What a catch! He baited his hook with the promise of fine wine and pulled us in. The Viogner was delightful – crisp and light – perfect for a hot day. If you’re feeling like some good fishing, let Barry catch you one day and definitely jump on the hook for the very big and equally rewarding Cabs.
