This wine was received as a tasting sample.Locations I4 – Italian Red Wine — dense ruby in the glass with dark blackberry and dried hay aromas. Juicy blackberry flavors gain complexity with earthy backnotes, dusty minerality and lingering black tea flavors. Tannins are a bit grippy and drying, the wine is medium bodied and the finish is on the long side of medium. 14.5% abv. SRP $18.99
Honestly, what’s not to love about this wine? There is plenty of flavor and complexity with just the right amount of tannins and texture… and that lovely, lingering finish. This wine is a delight to sip on its own, but will pair nicely with grilled flank steak, pizza, tomato-based pasta or stews.
The Locations I4 – Italian Red Wine is yet another example of winemaker Dave Phinney’s skill as a blender. With this wine he has chosen to blend grape varieties from southern and northern Italy. Negroamaro and Nero d’Avola are sourced from vineyards in Italy’s southern region, Puglia. Both varieties are known for their tannin structure, dark fruit flavors and body. Barbera, from Alba in Italy’s Piedmont region, was chosen for its acidity and lighter tannins. The result is this delightful red wine that, in true Italian fashion, will accompany a meal in style.
As is always the case with Dave Phinney’s Locations wines, appellation regulations (and restrictions) are ignored when sourcing grapes for these wines. That leaves him free to choose the grape varieties, vineyard sites and regions within a country that reflect his wine vision for that Location.
Locations wines are widely distributed. Look for them.
Cheers!
I had never heard of that wine. Very simple label. Can’t go wrong with the grapes from Puglia and Piedmont though.
All of the Locations wines, except the white wine from Corsica, have the distinctive country labels on them. I think you would appreciate both the I wine and Corse (Vermentino) in particular. Cheers, Jennifer!
