Veggie Burgers and Bordeaux

Yes, that sounds a little strange but it works. We were going to BBQ some Morningstar Garden Veggie Patties and I felt like having a nice wine, too. I chose a 2006 Chateau Ferriere, a Grand Cru Classe from Margaux, classified as a third growth. It had a nice dark garnet color and the nose was initially stinky or barnyard like, but in a very nice way. After a few minutes it changed to complex aromas of dark fruit, leather and tobacco. There were a fair amount of tannins with a light body but very well integrated with the complexity of flavors that followed the nose. This is an excellent wine that went very well with the Garden Patties which were grilled over charcoal, layered with sharp cheddar cheese and served on a toasted whole wheat bun. Excellent wine and excellent meal!

We had tasted this wine back in a March Bordeaux tasting and it was interesting to go back and read the similarities and differences.

  1. Pairing wine with veggie burgers is not strange. I did a post called “Hamburger Helper” but neglected to add a veggie burger with it – so I’ll have to try this. I find the older I get wine seems to go with just about everything. Although I haven’t tried wine with a breakfast meal yet, hmmm…
