For our final Monday night dinner of the year, Nancy made some pork chops baked on a bed of cabbage and apples. We went to the Farmer’s Market on Sunday and choose what was in season (cabbage, apples, onions and red potatoes). Nancy sauteed chopped onions, garlic, apples and shredded cabbage, then baked the pork chops on top of the mixture. This made a very tasty dish that was easy to prepare. She prepared smashed red potatoes to accompany the baked cabbage and pork chops.
The wine I chose was a 2009 Mollydooker “The Boxer” Shiraz. I knew this wine would be a big wine and probably over power the food but I wanted to try it again anyway. If you have been reading our blog you will remember I had the 2008 vintage when we were in Scottsdale last summer. This 2009 seemed to be a bigger wine that had a very dark ruby color with dark fruit, vanilla and some mint on the nose. The flavor was dark very ripe fruit with smooth tannins and good acidity. The 16% alcohol definitely showed with a hot sweet finish. And a little trivia, Mollydooker means “left handed” in Australian!
We have had a great food and wine year. Stay tuned for our New Years’ Eve post.
Happy New Year and Cheers!
