St. Amant is a local winery that makes several nice wines including one they call a vintage port. Usually I don’t care for wines that masquerade as Port but St. Amant does a pretty good job. Recently I found out they also make a tawny port with grapes from Amador County. The tawny port, bottled in 2011, was made from wine that has been maturing in barrels from 2001, 2003 and 2004.
As expected it has a light brown or amber color. The nose is nutty with caramel and the flavors are complex with nuttiness, caramel and something else I can’t quite pick out. There is a really nice spiced cedar finish. Overall a very nice effort for a domestic tawny port. Unfortunately, I have heard they won’t be producing any more of this so I guess I better get another bottle while it is still available.
