2005 Picchetti Vino de Vicino – The color of this wine from the Santa Cruz Mountains was a very dark ruby and the nose had dark fruit with a little vanilla. There were flavors of dark ripe fruit, plums and berries with a touch of vanilla. Well integrated, fine tannins and a medium length finish. This is a very nicely made wine that is very easy drinking. You just keep wanting more.
Our friend Steen who gave me this wine had this to add:
Turns out that Vino di Vicino is a Cab Sauv, of the same hillside as MonteBello (the trademark of Ridge Winery). The cellar is one of the oldest in California. High, well-worn brick with scars from the 1906 earthquake. The nearby quarry attests to the unique minerals found in the soil, the backside of the pacific ridge plate.
In addition to their tasting room in Cupertino, Picchetti also has a tasting room in South Lake Tahoe.
