The 2004 Blason De L’Evangile from Pomerol on the right bank of Bordeaux was excellent. It is a dark garnet color and the first thing that hits you is the big nose, floral with dark fruit and tobacco. You just want to smell the wine for a while before you drink any. In the mouth is rich dark fruit, leather, cedar and tobacco. The tannins are quite grippy, there is good acidity and a nice medium length finish. Drink it now if you can handle the tannins or wait a few more years as the tannins drop out and the flavor evolves.
This is the second wine of Château l’Evangile and depending on the vintage is 70% – 80% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc. Only one to two thousand cases are produced and the wine is aged 15 months in two year old barrels.
It’s now November 2012 and we had another bottle from the cellar. It was still excellent!
